Winter Is a Great Time to Bid Adieu to Unwanted Hair

Our North Carolina winters are pretty tame compared to those you’ll find in Maine or the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but they’re still winter, sort of. Although we’re not breaking out the -25 rated parkas here in Raleigh, we’re not putting on bikinis and heading to the coast either.

That makes winter a great time to get rid of your unwanted hair with laser hair removal at Skin & Cosmetic Solutions. We put our GentleMax Pro laser on the task of getting rid of your unwanted hair, and it’s very effective and comfortable.

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal puts laser energy to work disabling the hair follicles so that they are unable to grow hair in the future. The FDA has approved the use of lasers for “permanent hair reduction.” Due to hairs being in different phases of the growth cycle, laser hair removal at Skin & Cosmetic Solutions usually permanently removes 85-90 percent of unwanted hair in the treatment areas.

How does laser hair removal work?

There are two keys to laser hair removal: melanin and the hair being anchored in the hair follicle. Melanin in your hair provides the hair color (it also gives our skin its color). When laser light energy pulses are directed onto an area of unwanted hair, the melanin absorbs the laser light energy and it converts to heat. That heat then travels down the hair shaft into the follicle damaging the follicle and preventing it from producing hair.

Unfortunately, our roughly five million hairs on the human body are constantly moving through the growth cycle of anagen (growth), catagen (transition to rest), or telogen (resting) phases. Laser energy is only really effective when it catches hairs in the growth cycle, as they are actively anchored in the follicle. In the catagen and telogen phases the hair shaft is either in the process of being shed or is already shedding, so the laser energy can’t get down into the follicle to damage it. That’s why laser hair removal requires a series of sessions to catch more and more hair in the growth phase.

Our laser

At Skin & Cosmetic Solutions, we’re proud to offer our GentleMax Pro laser for our laser hair removal. It’s actually two lasers in one, and we feel it’s the best laser in the business.

Here’s how the GentleMax Pro accommodates all skin of the Fitzpatrick skin type skin tones.

  • The Alexandrite 755 nm wavelength is optimal for Skin Types I-III (I is pale white skin, blue/green eyes, blond/red hair; II is fair skin/blue eyes; III is darker white skin).
  • The ND:YAG 1064 nm wavelength is optimal for Skin Types IV-VI (IV is light brown skin, V is brown skin, VI is dark brown or black skin).

Faster treatments with large spot sizes

The GentleMax Pro lasers also have multiple spot sizes. These range from as small as 1.5 mm all the way up to 24 mm. This means that we can utilize a very small spot size for treating delicate areas, but we can expand to the large 24-millimeter spot size for large areas such as the legs for women or the back and shoulders for men.
