What is platelet-rich plasma?
Everyone has heard of blood platelets and their role in helping clot the blood to close a wound. But platelets also play a role in healing the wound because they have seven growth factors. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) simply concentrates your blood platelets into a serum that can be injected back under the skin to initiate the healing power of the platelets. Professional athletes have used PRP for years to help them recover from injury or surgery.
How is platelet-rich plasma made?
The process of creating PRP is simple. We start by taking a sample of your blood, about the same amount you have taken for any lab work. We then place the blood in a centrifuge, which separates out the red blood cells, leaving a concentrated number of platelets, white blood cells, and plasma. This is now PRP.
What happens in a Plasma Facial?
Our Plasma Facials combine a traditional facial with microneedling and PRP. We create your PRP, and then use our Rejuvapen microneedling pen across your face. The pen has 12 tiny needles that move up and down as the pen is moved across your facial skin. The needles create hundreds of microscopic holes through the epidermis down into the dermis. These tiny punctures trigger a wound response in the body. That response is to remodel the existing collagen in the area, and to produce new supplies of collagen to “heal” the perceived wounds, although they actually fully heal in just a couple hours. Collagen provides the skin’s underlying structural support, and its production declines with age. This new stimulation of collagen production improves the skin.
We apply your PRP to your skin prior to your microneedling and then we apply it a second time and massage it in with your facial. Thanks to the hundreds of tiny punctures, the PRP can effectively penetrate into the dermis where it can put its healing mechanisms to work improving your skin.
