Giving Acne The Red And Blue Light Treatment
- Posted on: Jul 16 2018
If you want to see your teenager run to his or her room in terror, simply ask them if they saw that new zit that raised its ugly head on their cheek. Acne is the bane of teenagers far and wide, but it can also affect adults, as well.
At Skin & Cosmetic Solutions, we find the Omnilux acne treatments to be very effective. And, since we’re in the middle of summer in Raleigh, now is a great time to get your teenager’s (or your) acne under control for the coming fall.
What Causes Acne?
Acne is basically caused by the sebaceous glands. These are the glands that produce the oil that keeps our skin and hair from being an arid wasteland. Unfortunately, the hormone havoc that is puberty can make the sebaceous glands go a little nuts, overproducing oil. This overproduction means that the oil can’t leave the follicle fast enough and it clogs. Now that clogged follicle is a prime spot for bacteria to accumulate and thrive. This causes inflammation in the form of pimples and other blemishes. Like most things, there are degrees of acne from mild to extreme, plus some forms of acne can cause permanent scarring.
What Is Phototherapy?
At Skin & Cosmetic Solutions, we use Omnilux phototherapy for our acne patients. The Omnilux system delivers both blue and red wavelengths of light onto acne lesions, killing the bacteria in the sebaceous glands.
The blue wavelength is 415nm, and the red wavelength is 633nm. The combination of two different wavelengths kills the most bacteria.
What Are The Advantages Of Our Omnilux Acne Treatments?
Omnilux has numerous advantages for our acne patients:
- Safe— Non-laser light is used with our Omnilux system.
- Painless— Low-level light systems are painless, unless you’re a bacterium.
- No side effects— No irritation or other issues.
- Temporarily effective in up to 85% of acne patients— Studies have shown that the dual wavelength approach in the Omnilux system is more effective for reducing papular-pustular acne.
It is important to note that Omnilux is not suitable for cystic, scarring acne. Omnilux suppresses lesions and breakouts, but isn’t a permanent solution as is needed with scarring acne.
