Tips for winter skin care

With winter weather fast approaching, you're probably starting to break out warm clothing to fight the cold temperatures. And just as you must adjust your wardrobe, it is essential to change your skin-care routine as well. Here are five easy ways for you to protect your skin from the harsh winter:

1. Continue to wear sunscreen.
Even though the sun might not feel as hot with the cooler winter temperatures, it is still emitting harmful ultraviolet rays. That said, it's important you keep wearing sunscreen throughout the winter months. Doing so will help you avoid sun burns, dark spots and even skin cancer.

2. Switch your facial moisturizer.
The frigid air can lead to dry skin, and although the lightweight moisturizer you have is great for summer and even fall months, winter requires you find one that's a little heavier. Rich, oil-based facial moisturizers are great for re-hydrating your skin. If you want to moisturize your face and protect it from UV rays (see tip No. 1) in the same step, find a lotion that contains SPF. The CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion AM With SPF 30 is a great option because it contains ceramides, which help fight back against dry and irritated skin.

3. Find a hydrating body wash.
Hopefully, you traded in your bar of soap for a body wash long ago, but if not, this winter is the perfect time to do so. Pick out a gentle body wash that will help re-hydrate your entire body. If you want to give your head and hair the same moisturizing treatment, consider trying Aqua Glycolic Shampoo and Body Cleanser. As a body wash, it serves as both a cleanser and light exfoliant; as a shampoo, it removes daily buildup from the entire hair follicle.

4. Don't overdo it on exfoliating.
Most of the time, exfoliating your skin is a good idea. But over the winter, doing it too much will result in dry or damaged skin. Do your skin a favor and limit the number of times you exfoliate to once or twice a week at the most. By doing so, you'll give your skin cells more time to produce collagen, a protein that helps give your skin a more youthful appearance.

5. Avoid alcohol in your skin products.
Whether it is in a toner or in an aftershave, alcohol is not a great ingredient for skin-care products during the winter months. That's due to the fact that alcohol has a tendency to dry out your skin. Over the winter, you already have to deal with dry skin on account of the weather – don't dry it out even more by using skin-care products with alcohol as a main ingredient.
