Can drinking water help your skin?
You already know that your body needs water, and drinking plenty of it can be great for your health. What you might not realize is that staying hydrated could also help you take better care of your skin.
In fact, a 2007 study from the International Journal of Cosmetic Science discovered that drinking around 9.5 cups of water every day for four weeks could change your skin's density and thickness.
While you may not find too many other scientific studies to substantiate that claim, the benefits are pretty apparent, Rachel Nazarian, a New York-based dermatologist at the Schweiger Dermatology Group and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, told Women's Health Magazine.
"I've found that water makes a big difference in skin health," Nazarian said. "Without adequate water intake, skin appears duller and wrinkles and pores more prominent."
Nazarian explained that small changes in the diet, like increasing your water intake, can impact the type of oil your skin produces, which can then affect your susceptibility to acne.
However, others argue that water isn't all that effective since it isn't absorbed directly by your skin, Katie Rodan, a San Francisco-based dermatologist and coauthor of Write Your Skin a Prescription for Change, told Real Simple.
Instead of relying on water to cure your problems, the magazine writes, you should avoid overexposure to skin-irritating elements like low humidity, winds, dry heat, long showers and baths and the sun. While drinking water doesn't hurt, it's not necessarily the answer, either.
