Restylane is a clear, liquid gel consisting of a non-animal-based hyaluronic acid (a naturally occurring sugar found in the human body) that is non-surgically injected into the skin to smooth wrinkles, sculpt lips and improve other facial features. Dr. Puente injects Restylane in one or more places on the treatment area to determine the correct amount of Restylane to use, then carefully injects it beneath the skin.
Restylane’s hyaluronic acid adheres to the skin as the water contained in the acid helps to retain volume under the skin’s surface. The acid acts as a magnet for water, which helps preserve the skin’s renewed volume.
Results are immediate and may last twice as long as collagen treatments, so Restylane injections are typically scheduled only twice a year. Evidence shows having a touch-up treatment before the product has fully dissipated enhances Restylane’s lasting effect.
Patients may experience some pain and discomfort from the needle during the injection, so Dr. Puente often uses local anesthesia, especially if he is treating the lip area. Swelling may be pronounced and last for two to three days. Patients can resume normal activities immediately, though they should stay out of the sun.
Common side effects include swelling and occasional bruising. Dr. Puente will explain possible complications and remedies during the initial consultation.
