Lipotherapy, a non-surgical alternative to liposuction, shrinks localized fat on arms, love handles, flanks, the back or the waist by disintegrating fat cells. During lipotherapy, Dr. Puente injects phosphatidylcholine and sodium deoxycholate into targeted fat cells. The body slowly reabsorbs the fatty acids and flushes them out over a period of weeks. Phosphatidylcholine is a natural surfactant (an agent that reduces the surface tension of liquids so the liquid spreads out), and sodium deoxycholate is an emulsifier necessary for making phosphatidylcholine injectable.
Lipotherapy injections are scheduled two to three weeks apart with a maximum of five treatments per area. During follow-up visits, Dr. Puente determines additional injections based on the targeted fat layer’s thickness and the patient’s response. The phosphatidylcholine and sodium deoxycholate continue to dissolve fat for up to six months.
Common side effects include inflammation and discomfort for up to 48 hours following injections. Mild soreness, temporary nodules, bruising and localized infection may occur at the injection site.
