Why are we so obsessed with lips?

Lips are all the rage right now. Thanks to stars with luscious pouts like Kylie Jenner and Angelina Jolie, it’s very trendy to undergo some sort of lip augmentation treatment. According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, these procedures have increased by 5 percent in the last year, contributing to an overall growth of 48 percent since 2000.

“Enhancing lips is a simple way to make a big impact.”

Why are these procedures becoming so popular? Dr. David H. Song, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, told Yahoo Beauty that it’s not just about following celebrity influence or chasing a trend. It’s because patients see enhancing lips as a simple way to make a big impact in their overall cosmetic goals.

“Our research shows that patients are looking for overall facial balance, and they’re seeking procedures to achieve that balance,” Song said. “So it’s not just about bigger or ‘plumper’ lips. It’s about finding the best look for them one that flatters their face.”

Different treatments produce different results. While implants can increase lip size, injectable procedures work to improve other aspects of that area. Michael C. Edwards, the president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, told Women’s Health magazine that fewer women want to achieve the “overly full, fish-lip aesthetic.” He added that many women are driven to undergo a lip procedure because they believe the look is “more sensual.”

At Skin & Cosmetic Solutions, we offer Restylane Silk, a procedure that targets lip definition. As we age, our lips lose their shape and the lines around them become more noticeable. This is the first FDA-approved treatment to specifically focus on these problems.
