Why more men are turning to cosmetic procedures

Men and plastic surgery have often had a strained relationship, but it's a new year, and we continue to progress in an age of wider acceptance of men undergoing cosmetic procedures. In fact, it's grown past just being accepted into being in higher demand.

… now around 10 percent of cosmetic surgery in the U.S. is performed on men

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, minimally invasive cosmetic procedures among men increased by 44 percent between 2000 and 2005, and now around 10 percent of cosmetic surgery in the U.S. is performed on men. Recently, a survey of residents in Delhi, India found that 45 percent of men have had some form of plastic surgery.

According to Bob Murphy, the president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more men are considering cosmetic changes because "the whole emphasis on youth has extended so men want to appear youthful socially a lot longer."

A Forbes magazine feature from 2006 also attributed this push to a society-wide desire to look good in spite of aging. Men want their healthy efforts to be reflected in an equally healthy appearance. There are many reasons why men choose to undergo a cosmetic procedure, though. If you're wondering how it could benefit you, here are some reasons why men have chosen to take the leap:

Balding

Male pattern baldness affects over half of all men to some extent, and hair loss is extremely common in men over the age of 50. While some may be perfectly comfortable with the hair loss, it can leave others feeling insecure. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to treat the effects of male pattern baldness or hair thinning and receding. Many men turn to cosmetic procedures like hair transplants or hair-stimulating treatments.

Wrinkles

Nobody likes fine lines and wrinkles, men included. In the case of Bruce Hildebrand, a former employee of the U.S. Department of Defense, it was the constant look of anger in his expression from a crease between his eyes. According to Forbes, after six injections of Botox, Hildebrand planned on undergoing a facelift for even better improvement on his wrinkles.

While facelifts are effective, they have a longer recovery period. That can be ideal for men at retirement age, but for working professionals, it's important to be able to get back to the office as soon as possible. A less invasive procedure, like our microdermabrasion or exfoliating peel services, can reduce the look of fine lines and hyperpigmentation by exfoliating the skin or removing dead skin cells.
